Biosafety Containment

Image
Biosafety Containment :    ⇒ A biological safety level (BSL), or biosafety containment level, is a set of laboratory safeguards (equipment, practices, security) designed to protect researchers in the laboratory, as well as the surrounding community and environment, from infection  . Classification of infective microorganisms by risk group : Risk Group 1 ( no or low individual and community risk) : ⇒ A microorganism that is unlikely to cause human or animal disease .  Risk Group 2 ( moderate individual risk, low community risk) : ⇒ A pathogen that can cause human or animal disease but is unlikely to be a serious hazard to laboratory workers, the community, livestock or the environment. Laboratory exposures may cause serious infection, but effective treatment and preventive measures are available and the risk of spread of infection is limited.  Risk Group 3 (high individual risk, low community risk) : ⇒ A pathogen that usually causes serious human o...

Disinfectant Vs Antiseptic

What is Disinfectant?     A disinfectant can be defined as an antimicrobial agent that can be applied on the surface of some objects in order to destroy the microorganisms residing on it. How does it destroy the micro-organisms? The simple answer to this is – antimicrobial agents.    ⇒ A disinfectant is an antimicrobial agent. It is not necessary that a disinfectant will kill all the microorganisms. It is not as effective as sterilization. The process of sterilization kills all types of living forms but a disinfectant kills only certain types of microbes. It is generally applied to a floor or a drainage system. Most of the popularly used cleaning products used in homes and offices are nothing but disinfectants . Types of Disinfectants Some common types of disinfectants include : Air disinfectants:  It is defined as the chemical substances which are used to kill the microorganisms that are suspended in the air. It can also be called as a disinfec...

Microbes and their uses

Image
Introduction : Microbes are present everywhere on earch, iie. in soil, air, water, inside our body and that of other animals and plants. Ihey are even present in extreme conditions like thermal vents (geysers) with high temperature as 100°C , under thick layers of snow and in highly acidic environments. The microbes like fungi and bacteria can be cultured in laboratory  on nutritive media to form colonies, that can be seen with the  naked eyes. Such cultures are useful in scientific studies on  microorganisms. Microbes have also become part of many u seful articles used by humans like fermented honey, wines,b read, curd, etc. The various microbes used in household  products, industries and sewage are discussed further . Microbes in Household Products : ⇒Microbes and their products are used in everyday life,   e.g. production of curd, formation of dough,cheese,etc... Curd : ⇒Microorganisms like Lacobacillus and other commonly called Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) g...

Bacterial Endotoxin Test

Image
Introduction :     The bacterial endotoxin test is a critical quality control test used in the pharmaceutical industry to ensure the safety of parenteral drugs and medical devices. Endotoxins are bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) found in the cell walls of Gram-negative bacteria. When introduced into the human body, particularly through injection or infusion, endotoxins can trigger strong immune responses and cause severe adverse reactions, including fever, shock, and even death.     Key aspects of the bacterial endotoxin test  : Purpose : The primary purpose of the bacterial endotoxin test is to confirm that pharmaceutical products, particularly those intended for injection, are free from harmful levels of endotoxins. This test helps ensure the safety and efficacy of drugs and medical devices. Test Methods : There are various methods for conducting the bacterial endotoxin test, but the most common one is the Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) test.  ⇒T...
